How to use a trencher: everything you need to know

When digging a trench, there are a number of machines you can use, including an excavator, mini-excavator, or trencher. While both types of excavators have specific use cases, trenchers are designed to make trenching as simple and efficient as possible.

Whether digging for irrigation systems, gutters, utilities, wires, cables, pipes, or cutting tree roots, trenchers can power projects both small and large. In this blog, we will focus on the different types of trenchers and how to operate them.

What is a trencher used for?

The main function of a trencher is to dig narrow trenches in the ground. On utility projects, trenchers help lay underground pipes, cables and conduits for water, electric, telecommunications and sewer systems. In landscaping, they are used to dig trenches for sprinkler systems, drain pipes, and landscape lighting cables. The construction industry also uses trenchers for foundation work, pipe installation and road construction.

Types of trenching machines

There are two main types of trenchers: push trenchers and ride-on trenchers. Each type has its own uses, which we'll cover below.

Walk-behind trencher

Walk-behind trenchers are compact machines designed for small projects and tight spaces. They operate manually while walking backwards and are ideal for tasks such as installing irrigation pipes, laying electrical cables and digging trenches for landscape edges. These models are easy to control and suitable for residential and commercial applications.

Ride-on trenching machine

Ride-on trenchers are larger and more powerful than push trenchers and can handle heavier trenching projects. Ride-on trenchers feature an operator seat and cab that allow the operator to control the trenching process while being protected from the elements. Because of this, trenchers are used on larger construction sites that require more power, such as digging rocky ground or pavement, thus reducing the need for manual labor.

Should I use a wheel trencher or a chain trencher?

Trenchers can cut using two different methods: toothed metal wheels or chains. Toothed metal wheel trenchers are used for cutting harder terrain such as rocky soil and pavement. Chain trenchers look like giant chainsaws and are used to cut tree roots and soil.

How to use ride-on and walk-behind trenchers

While walk-behind trenchers are suitable for small to medium-sized jobs and ride-on trenchers are suitable for larger projects, they operate essentially the same way. Whether you're installing irrigation lines, laying electrical cables, or creating landscape features, using a trencher effectively requires attention to detail and compliance with safety guidelines. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use a trencher effectively

Preparation and Site Inspection: Inspect the trencher to ensure it is in proper working order. Check engine oil and hydraulic oil levels, and check for wear on the cutting teeth or chain. Survey the job site to identify any obstructions, underground utilities, or other hazards that may interfere with trenching operations.

Safety Equipment and Precautions: Before operating a trencher, wear necessary safety gear, including a helmet, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots. Ensure bystanders maintain a safe distance from the work area. Become familiar with the location of emergency stop buttons and other safety features on your machine.

Start the trencher: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to start the trencher. Familiarize yourself with the controls, including throttle, depth adjustment, and forward/reverse movement. Before starting the engine, please apply the handbrake and ensure that the trencher is in neutral position.

Set Depth and Width: Adjust the trencher's depth and width settings to meet job requirements. Use the controls to set the desired trench depth, making sure it is large enough to accommodate the utilities or other materials being installed. Adjust trench width as needed to achieve desired trench size.

Trenching operation: proceed slowly along the planned trenching path, maintaining a constant speed. Use the controls to guide the trencher and around obstacles or terrain changes. Pay close attention to the trenching depth and make adjustments as needed to maintain uniformity and speed throughout the process. Remember, when using a trencher, travel in the correct direction (walk-behind trenchers travel forward, ride-on trenchers travel forward).

Organizing and Cleaning: When finished, release the cutting unit and lift it off the ground. Fill the trench with soil or other suitable material, ensuring proper compaction to prevent sinking. Before leaving the machine, shut down the trencher's engine and engage the handbrake.

By following these steps and remaining cautious throughout the trenching process, operators can use the trenching machine safely and complete a variety of projects with precision and efficiency.
